What is UCAS?

In increasing number of courses and professions are no-go areas without a higher education qualification. The role of the Universities & College Admission Service (UCAS) is to help you achieve your goal.
As the name implies, UCAS is at the very heart of Higher Education. Operating as the only central admissions service, for full time under-graduate courses in the UK, they handle over 45,000 applications a year.
What is UCAS?The admissions part of the name though is only part of the story. Their belief is that everyone in the U.K, whatever his or her background, deserves access to up to date information about study possibilities at colleges and universities. The good news is that the U.K has more courses to choose from than any other Country in Europe.
To find out further information, covering anything from how and when to apply for 2004 entry, to information on foundation degrees and course available.

The government is rolling out Educational Maintenance Allowances (EMAs) from September 2004.
To be eligible, a learner must be:
  • Aged 16-19

  • On a valid course (up to A Level standard or equivalent) at a school or college, for over 12 hours a week

  • Ordinarily resident in England

  • Living in a household of which the gross income is £30,000 a year or less

  • There are three levels of assistance:
  • EMAFor learners living in a household where the income is under £19,000, the payment will be £30 a week

  • For learners living in a household where the income is between £19,001 and £23,000, the payment will be £20 a week

  • For all other learners living in households with an income of under £30,000, the payment will be £10 a week.

  • Payments will be made during term time only. They are dependent on the learner signing a contract. This contract links the payments to good attendance and progression in their studies. Learners may also be eligible for bonuses based on continuing their course and progressing in their studies.
Learners currently in Year 11 will be able to apply for EMAs from April onwards. For further information, please contact your local school or College.
