The University of Leeds in Wakefield
|

The University of Leeds came to the Wakefield area in August 2001,
following the merger with Bretton Hall College. It is an ongoing
pleasure and privilege for the University to be working with people
in such a welcoming and vibrant city. The Wakefield area is very
close to my heart; as I grew up and went to school in Hemsworth,
so not only do I have a professional responsibility, but also a personal
commitment to bringing University education to Wakefield.
University education is not just for 18-21 year olds, with excellent
A level grades: it’s also for adults who might not have had
the opportunities when they were younger, and for people wanting
to continue their professional development. At our Wakefield Centre,
well known to local’s as the site of the old Manygates Maternity
Hospital, the School of Continuing Education run courses in social
work, counselling, teaching-assistant training, community work and
an access course. These courses provide pathways from certificate,
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and for both full and part
time study. The common theme linking these courses is lifelong learning;
ongoing professional education and training; and responding to the
needs of the local community. Much of the work is done in partnerships
with various organisations and institutions. Also at the Wakefield
campus there are start-up schemes for local graduates, plus links
with regional small and medium sized enterprises.
Working within the cultural arena and enhancing the cultural experiences
of the region is also a major aim of the University. This is being
delivered through the Bretton Hall campus with undergraduate and
postgraduate courses in drama, acting, dance, cultural studies and
creative writing. We are very excited to announce the completion
of a new Performance Centre for drama productions, dance and other
cultural activities. This provides a flexible performance space and
seating for over 300 persons, as well as first class conference faculties.
Together these two sites are providing the high quality courses for
which the University of Leeds is renowned and helping to bring top
class higher education to the Wakefield region.

The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s most popular universities
based in a vibrant student friendly city. Leeds offers a wide range
of courses, from the more traditional subjects such as Medicine,
English, History and Law to specialist subject areas such as Broadcast
Journalism, Aviation Technology with Pilot Studies, Midwifery, Childhood
Education and Dance. Our Bretton Hall Campus is located just outside
Wakefield is which is well equipped with professional recording studios
and specialist studios for painting, costume design and sculpture.
Students based at Bretton Hall have access to facilities at both
campuses and can commute between the two via a regular bus service.
The University is committed to helping young people who have the
ability to go to higher education to fulfil their potential. The
Access to Leeds Scheme is one way of doing this. The Scheme provides
individual assistance to pupils in schools in Leeds and Wakefield.
Special consideration is given to these young people who demonstrate
commitment and academic ability but who have experienced financial
hardship, educational disadvantage or difficult family circumstances.
The young people are given support in study skills for two days in
April and develop a link with the academic department of their interest.
There is a wide range of financial assistance to help you study your
chosen subject from Opportunity Bursaries aimed at under 21 years
old from a low-income family to other subject specific scholarships.
The University offers a guidance service for all ages and for all
levels of previous qualifications. Guidance is provided on the types
of courses available at all education institutions and is a dedicated,
impartial and confidential service.
