From Care Homes to Engineering Student of the Year

Faye BanksFaye Banks is an inspiration to many young women, having carved herself a successful career in the male dominated world of engineering and considerable difficulties in her personal circumstances.
Taken into care at the age of ten, Faye spent six years with a foster family who did not share her enthusiasm for further education. Moved to another foster home, she experienced further problems but, just as things were looking their most desperate, Faye’s friend’s parents offered her a loving and secure home.

“The support and skill of the staff at College helped me to gain the qualifications I needed to get a job I really enjoy”

“I had a difficult start to life, but I truly believe you can achieve anything by working hard and believing in yourself”

This new situation enabled Faye to engage with her academic aspirations and she enrolled on an Intermediate GNVQ, followed by an Advanced GNVQ at Wakefield College. Towards the end of her GNVQ, she gained a Modern Apprenticeship sponsored by Featherstone’s Linpac Plastics.
Wakefield District Learning PartnershipFaye spent the next two years studying for an NVQ Level 3 in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering while, at the same time, undertaking an HNC in Electrical Engineering.
Faye’s achievements shone out at College and she was voted Engineering Student of the Year and she also won the
Principal’s award at the Women’s Science and Engineering ceremony.
Faye has since gone on to study for a BEng Honours Degree in Manufacturing Systems via day release with the Open University.

Mark MillardMark Millard took advantage of an invaluable scheme, provided by Jobcentre Plus, to enter a Full Time Education and Training programme with a Jobcentre Plus approved Training Provider. The scheme provides help and support to individuals, giving them the skills, experience and confidence to succeed in the labour market.
Mark recognised this as being an excellent opportunity, and found that it gave him the motivation that he needed to improve his job prospects. In fact, he did so well whilst on the course, that after completing his qualification, he gained a placement in the busy work prep room, as a learning assistant with the training provider. When the department expanded, it soon became apparent that a second member of staff was needed. Mark had worked hard and settled in well. He had made a big impression on staff and clients alike and was offered the job. He has proved to be an invaluable asset to the Team, and has received excellent feedback from his Job Centre Plus - Part of the Department for Work and Pensionsnew employer.
He would recommend the Education and Training programme to anyone who is keen to step on the first rung of the career ladder, whilst receiving the necessary training to succeed.
