Mark Eales
Christ must be the first source of inspiration for me.
In terms of others; internationally, Martin Luther
King, and nationally, Professor John Tomlinson, who
was a mentor for many years. John Tomlinson, who died
in 2005, was an educationist who stood up for teachers
and pioneered key ideas. As professor of education
at Warwick University until 1997, he encouraged school-industry
links and kept colleagues' fingers on the national
pulse. He had an ability to innovate and empower and
was intuitive and shrewd, with a keen and penetrating
intellect. John was also a powerful advocate for those
with special educational needs and in 1996 produced
the Tomlinson Report on inclusive learning in further
education. He was a genial host to life, and took everyone
he met into his heart. His insights and example will
illuminate the work of those who teach and learn for
decades to come.
My wife and three children are also a continuing inspiration
and support to me, and finally, the officers, head teachers
and teachers, and of course, children of Doncaster.
Mark Eales is the Specialist
Director of Education Standards with Doncaster
Metropolitan Borough Council. The Directorate of
Education Standards supports schools and their
management team in raising the standards of Doncaster’s
children and adult learners. It works closely with
the Directorate of Neighbourhoods, Communities
and Children’s Services to ensure that the
council is able to support individuals and communities
to reach their aspirations. Mark is leading a significant
improvement in school standards across the Borough
and ensures that challenging targets are met within
the schools. He also provides a professional client
link for Head Teachers in providing advice, support
and information on strategic issues.
Mark has most
recently written a book entitled “How to be a Good Headteacher”,
in which he seeks to pass on his experience of
32 years in the education business.
