Experience the rewards of Higher
Education at The University of Leeds
The University of Leeds has a long
history of working with schools and colleges to offer support
to teachers and to help raise the aspirations and achievements
of their students.
We run a programme of activities that will help school
students find out what makes university life so rewarding
and we provide a considered and supervised path towards
an alternative entry scheme to the University of Leeds.
The University is keen to encourage young people onto campus
to find out about courses of study and to have their questions
answered. Our annual residential summer school and our
higher experience education days offer students the chance
to experience a taste of university life.
Our Summer School is a residential, week-long event and
an ideal way for students to round off Year 11. One hundred
and twenty-one places are available with 35 specifically
reserved for students from the Wakefield area. Participants
are encouraged to consider the many benefits that a university
education can offer. They visit a number of University
schools where they crack codes, take part in percussions
sessions, launch water-fuelled rockets, take part in topical
discussions, act as prosecution or defence in a mock trial
and a host of other activities. During the week they visit
local employers and also take part in a range of social
activities from dancing lessons to a night at the theatre.
Participants live on campus in halls of residence and are
mentored by specially trained University of Leeds students
to ensure they get the best out of their stay.

involved contact Stephen Cheeseman 0113 343 7671.
A Higher Education Experience
Day (either a full-day or
half-day event) is a fun-based, thought-provoking introduction
to higher education. Taking place on the University campus,
these events are aimed at Year 9 and 10 school students.
With the involvement of current undergraduates and academic
departments, the event also includes a tour of the campus
and activities to increase understanding and awareness
of higher education.
To arrange a visit contact Stephen Cheeseman 0113 343 7671.
The University recognises that not all applicants are able
to demonstrate their talents as readily as others through
their examination grades alone. Our Access
to Leeds Scheme
is an admissions scheme designed to help those whose personal
circumstances may have affected their ability to succeed
at the levels that would normally be expected by admissions
tutors, and provides individual assistance to students
in schools in Leeds and Wakefield.
Under the scheme, students recommended to us by their school
or college will be looked at within the context of their
individual situation. The University can then provide an
Access to Leeds offer as well as the standard offer. The
Access to Leeds offer provides an alternative A-level requirement
alongside a module taken over the Easter and summer before
the degree course begins. The module is designed to develop
reflective learning skills and improve learning strategies
and includes subjects such as the brain and learning, managing
your time, academic reading skills, writing and assessment
at the University and an introduction to ICT.

Richard Kemp 0113 343 7672.
In addition to this focussed programme of outreach
activity, specialist academic visits can be provided
to a variety
of University departments on request. We also offer
free and impartial pre-entry guidance for all ages
and for
all levels of previous qualifications – anyone
who needs help in making choices about higher education.
