Learning for Life
Wakefield Council’s
focus on the strengthening of families and neighbourhoods,
and the regeneration
of the district through skills development and cultural
industries, is reflected in the organisation and management
of the adult and community education service.
A network of community sector partners, schools, employers,
and others, provide the local settings for the delivery
of a thriving programme of courses to re-engage citizens
back into learning. There is a long-term and continuing
commitment by the Council to the provision of new learning
opportunities in the heart of some of the most deprived
neighbourhoods in the district, working with local groups.
The commissioning of support services from community organisations provides investment
into neighbourhoods, and helps to create a platform of community engagement that
in turn supports a wide range of community-oriented activities, events and services.
The courses and programmes include qualification courses for employment in areas
such as administration, care, childcare, construction and beauty therapies; and
courses to improve English, maths and computer skills. These programmes develop
employability skills, improving people’s employment prospects.
Family learning and parenting courses support families learning together, and
have an impact both on children and parents / carers. In addition, there is a
good range of classes in creative arts; languages and health. This personal development
learning supports creativity and well-being. Investment in adult education is
an investment into the communities, neighbourhoods and families of the Wakefield
District.
